Are You a Fabriholic?

Our Ongoing Love Affair with Fabric

By Janet Wickell, About.com

The comments I've read about Hancock Fabric's bankruptcy and store closings are revealing -- we quilters sure do love our fabrics. But I'm pretty sure it goes deeper than that -- we crave them. And if you don't put yourself into that category just yet, give it a little time, because it won't take long for the fabric gene to become embedded deep within your DNA.

Raise Your Hand if You're a Fabriholic!

So I wondered, do you think your family and friends would describe you as a quilter who:

  • buys fabric just because she (or he) likes it, and not because she needs it for a project

  • wants to touch and feel every piece of fabric she encounters

  • stacks fabric all over the sewing room -- for inspiration; or tucks it away in a secret hiding place if she hasn't gone public with her addiction

  • intercepts checking account statements and credit card bills to minimize raised-eyebrow-events by the significant other

  • doesn't really want to cut into that beautiful print

  • heads straight to the fabric vendors before looking at the quilts in the quilt show (there's no time to waste -- they might sell out of something)

  • takes photos of fabric immediately so she can put them on her Flikr gallery

  • starts a blog where she can talk about her addiction with other addictees

  • stops by our forums to tell friends about her new purchases as soon as she gets home

Now let's be clear -- I think every one of those points describes perfectly normal behavior, except the part about hiding things -- no way, no excuses! It's there, it's mine, and I love it.

What kind of fabriholic are you? Drop down the page just a bit and take the poll.
